Limestone is a sedimentary stone with at least 50% by weight calcium carbonate or or calcite. Limestone is often composed of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral, molluscs or foraminifera. The flamed, old world, rustic look is achieved by wetting, then running an oxygen-acetlyene or propane torch over the stone causing the surface layer to expand and flake off, exposing rough stone. Due to the high content of calcium carbonate, limestone is susceptible to etching from acid based contaminants eg wine, citrus, soft drinks.
